Helping to Preserve Moscow's Water
Through Proper Irrigation Practices
Four Easy Steps to Responsible Lawn Irrigation

(note: a more detailed process is given here)

In the Moscow-Pullman area, each time you sprinkle a new area of lawn, you should apply approximately 0.6 inches of water to that area to fill up the voids in the soil. The lawn loses the water through evapotranspiration which depends on the amount of sunshine, cloud cover, and wind. You only have to repeat the sprinkling when those 0.6 inches have been used up. This site helps you determine how long to irrigate in order to apply  0.6 inches of water, and how often you should do this. The site also has some tips on smart irrigation practices, and background information on irrigation and water management.

The purpose for this page is to make the public aware of the need for water conservation in lawn watering by informing homeowners how long to water their lawns.  For a detailed explanation of the problem of over watering lawns, please look at Why Water Conservation is Important.

Disclaimer:  A healthy lush green lawn is a function of many management aspects exclusive of just  water.  Aspects such as fertilizer, shading, mowing, and use also play a large role in the appearance of a lawn and should not be neglected.
